吹きガラスの技法の中でも「※ピン・ブロウ」という特殊な技法を用いて器を作っています。
※ピン・ブロウとは一般的な「吹きガラス」では、筒状の鉄竿を用いて、巻き取ったガラスに息を吹き込んで膨らませます。一方、「ピン・ブロウ」の場合は、ただの（芯の詰まった）鉄棒にガラスを巻き取り、ガラスが柔らかいうちに針（＝ピン）で突いてあけた穴に、空気を吹き込んで（＝ブロウ）膨らませます。艸田さんの場合は、濡れた新聞紙で穴を塞いで、水蒸気で膨らませるという方法をとっていますが、他にも、パファーという道具で息を吹き込んだり、エアー・コンプレッサーで圧縮した空気を勢いよく送り込んだりする方法もあります。
道具などでガラス表面を触って形を整えることもせず、ただ、重力と竿を回す遠心力とだけを用いて制作しています。簡単な道具、単純な技法によって、作為のないシンプルなフォルムが現われるよう心がけています。ピン・ブロウならではの柔らかさと透明感の高い仕上がりが特徴です。

*Pin-blow: In general glassblowing, a cylindrical iron rod is used to inflate the wound glass by blowing air into it. In contrast, with pin-blow, glass is wound onto a simple (solid-core) iron rod, and while the glass is still soft, a hole is made by poking it with a needle (=pin), and air is blown into the hole to inflate it. IKusoda's case, he uses damp newspaper to seal the hole and inflate the glass with steam, but other methods include using a puffer to blow air into the glass, or using an air compressor to forcefully send compressed air.
He doesn't use any tools to shape the glass surface; he creates his pieces using only gravity and the centrifugal force of rotating the rod. He strives to create simple, unpretentious forms using simple tools and techniques. The resulting pieces are characterized by the softness and high transparency unique to pin-blow.
